# Contracts are authored in YAML and served as JSON

Authored data product contracts are YAML files in Git, while runtime-served contract views are JSON returned by APIs. YAML keeps human review and PR diffs approachable, especially for dbt-style workflows. JSON keeps runtime access predictable for agents, APIs, validators, indexes, and generated clients. Both formats should be governed by JSON Schema.
