# `Raft` Leader Election - Cont'd

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just now we introduced that the election timeout triggers the election. Next, we assume that the leader in the cluster that is replicating data suddenly crashes (or is isolated from the network). Due to the existence of the heartbeat time interval (the interval between leader sending heartbeats), when no heartbeat from the leader is received for a long time, a follower will increase its own term identifier, become a candidate role, and vote for itself. At the same time, it will send a voting request to other nodes in the cluster, which contains the newly increased term value. Thus, the voting work is repeated, and a new leader will be produced immediately.
