High cost includes high maintenance cost and high infra cost for complicated system. Multiple workarounds were designed to mitigate certain problems.

However, not all of the missing functionalities can be addressed with a workaround, such as cross table strong consistency transaction.

The challenges included:
- High cost and heavy on-call.
- Complex in-house transaction and index service tools built on top of HBase.
- Hard to upgrade HBase to latest versions.
