# Backup Overview

+ Backup allows database to be restored from an earlier point in time to help the business recover from an unplanned event
+ Backup is critical to protect against data loss or corruption
+ Types of backups:
  + **`Hot`** backups are backups that are performed on data while the database is online and accessible to users
  + In a **`Warm`** backup scenario, the server is powered on, but some database operations may be restricted
  + **`Cold`** backups are backups that are performed on data while the database is offline and not accessible to users
    + **`Cold`** backup is not recommended in `TiDB`
