# Logical Backups

__*Logical backups*__

+ Perform a full data dump by using dumpling or TiDB Lightning.
+ These data dumps are based on a specific point in time, but are slower among all backup technologies.
+ Advantages:
+ This process creates a SQL script that you can execute on your TiDB server.
+ You can use this script to reload the database on a different host running a different architecture.
+ Disadvantages:
+ By default, during a dump, locking tables prevents users from modify data during backup.

Perform a full data dump by using dumpling or TiDB Lightning.

These data dumps are based on a specific point in time, but are slower among all backup technologies.

Advantages:
This process creates a SQL script that you can execute on your TiDB server.
You can use this script to reload the database on a different host running a different architecture.

Disadvantages:
By default, during a dump, locking tables prevents users from modify data during backup.

Logical backup features:
Converting databases and tables to SQL statements
  Easy to read and migration
Requires that the TiDB database is running during the backup process
Can back up local and remote TiDB databases simultaneously
Typically slower than the original (binary) backup
The size of the logical backup file may exceed the size of the database being backed up.
Statements may take up more space than the data they represent.
