# Migration Life Cycle of a Target Cloud Database: Discovery Phase

__*Discovery Phase*__

+ Database migration inputs
+ IT landscape and business dependencies
+ Higher-level migration planning, resourcing and time line

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+ The discovery phase consists of collecting source database information such as:
  + Database family
  + Database version
  + Database size
  + Operation system
  + Endian-ness of the database
  + Database character set
+ Data types used in the source database
+ Business dependency: Application may have monthly or quarterly releases and the migration must be completed before that. In such cases, you must select the faster approach for migration.
+ Resourcing: Business dependency and resourcing go hand-in-hand. If the migration is critical and must be completed within a stipulated time, resources working on cloud migration must be enhanced.
+ Example Scenario
+ The following is some of the information you would collect during the discovery phase of an on-premises database, which needs to be migrated to `TiDB Cloud`.
    + Database family: `MySQL` compatibility
    + Database version: `MySQL Community Server 8.0.22`
    + Database name: `PROD1`, `PROD2`
    + Database size: `500 GB`
    + Operating system: `CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 ( Core )`
+ Endian-ness of the database: Little endian
    + Database priority: Development, non-critical
+ Memory structure: InnoDB buffer poll - 96 GB
