# bend-ingest-kafka Benchmark Report

## Test Environment

| Item | Spec |
|------|--------------------------------------------|
| Machine | 1C2G (1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM) |
| Kafka | Apache Kafka 4.0 (KRaft mode, single node) |
| Lake | Single node, default configuration |
| bend-ingest-kafka | v0.5.0, 1 worker, zstd compression enabled |
| Data Format | JSON (`isJsonTransform=true`) |
| Message Size | ~42 bytes per message |

## Test Methodology

- Kafka producer generates messages at fixed rates (100/s, 1000/s, 10000/s)
- Each message: `{"name":"Alice","age":30,"city":"Beijing"}` (randomized values)
- Measured metrics: upload to stage time, copy into time, end-to-end throughput
- Each test runs for 60 seconds to reach steady state

## Key Observations

1. **Bottleneck is Lake I/O, not Kafka consumption.** Kafka batch fill takes 1-2 ms when data is available, but upload + copy takes ~1.8-3 s per batch.

2. **Larger batch sizes improve throughput** — amortizing the fixed overhead of each upload+copy cycle across more rows. Going from batch 1000 to 10000 improves peak throughput from ~520 to ~3,800 rows/s.

3. **Latency vs throughput tradeoff.** Batch size 1000 gives ~2 s end-to-end latency per batch. Batch size 10000 with low Kafka rate (100/s) means waiting ~100 s to fill a batch before any data lands in Lake.

4. **Upload stage cost is dominant** — averaging 950 ms to 1.8 s depending on payload size. Zstd compression keeps staged file sizes small (~34 KB per 1000 rows).

5. **Copy into is consistent** — averaging 830-1200 ms regardless of batch size, indicating Lake handles the COPY command efficiently once data is staged.

6. **No upper-limit stress test performed.** Due to the limited test machine spec (1C2G), we did not push for maximum throughput. On higher-spec machines (e.g., 4C8G+) with multiple workers, throughput is expected to scale linearly.

## Recommendations

| Scenario | Recommended Batch Size | Rationale |
|----------|----------------------|-----------|
| Low latency (< 5s) | 1,000 | Minimizes time to fill batch |
| Balanced | 5,000 | Good throughput with moderate latency |
| High throughput | 10,000 | Maximizes rows/s, acceptable latency at high Kafka rates |
| Very high volume (> 10k/s) | 10,000 + multiple workers | Scale horizontally with `workers: 2-4` |
